DEBS WHITTAKER: FOUNDER AND OWNER

I qualified with a Bachelor of Physical Education and Mathematics 11 Major from the University of Witwatersrand in 1992. Over the past 30 years, I have gained experience working in the following fields: teaching, project management, change management consulting and business process re-engineering, Internet consulting, market research, brand management, marketing strategy, digital marketing, website design and development, Public Relations and social media, and hybrid event management.

My career started in 1993 as a mathematics teacher at Bryanston High School in Johannesburg where I taught for three years. In 1995 I joined Synovate where I conducted market research surveys and developed Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) research reports for Delta Motor Corporation. In 1996 I was employed by REL Consultancy as a change management consultant, where I worked on query management reporting and business process re-engineering for the Credit Control Department at SA Breweries and Afrox.

My experience in the ICT sector started in 1997 when I was employed at BMI-TechKnowledge Group as an Internet Analyst and was later promoted to BMI-T’s Marketing and Communications Manager. In 2000 I was approached by Digital Planet, one of South Africa’s first e-tailers, to head up the new marketing division and to grow the online community of permission-based users.

I started Coolcumba Communications in 2001 and have worked with many local and global clients, focusing on taking companies to market in a digital era using integrated sales and marketing strategies.
